After more than a day, the fighting at one of Somalia’s most popular hotels in the capital, Mogadishu, should now be over.
It was on Friday night that members of the extremist group al-Shabab, with ties to al-Qaeda, entered the hotel and barricaded themselves on the upper floor.
Fighting between the attackers and security forces continued into Saturday night, and only shortly before midnight, Swedish time, security forces stated that the fighting was over.
– The security forces have ended the siege and the attackers are dead, we have not seen any shelling from inside the building in the last hour, an authority source told AFP.
At least 20 people were killed and another 40 were injured, including several children.
