Fight in Kosovo’s parliament over water at Albin Kurti

It was Thursday that the chaotic scenes in Kosovo’s parliament unfolded. As the country’s Prime Minister Albin Kurti was giving a speech during a debate on measures to calm the situation in northern Kosovo, a member of an opposition party came forward with a bottle and threw water at him.

Immediately after the water was thrown, several people in the parliament started arguing with each other. On videos from the debate, several people from the ruling party and the opposition can be seen pushing each other.

No one is said to have been injured in connection with the big fight, writes AFP.

The news agency reports that this is not the first time that unrest has broken out in the parliament in Kosovo. During his years in the opposition, Albin Kurti got big headlines, including after he released loose tear gas during a political meeting.

The big fight happened after several statements by Albin Kurti about reducing tensions in northern Kosovo.

The unrest in the area flared up after local elections held in April. Ethnic Serbs boycotted the election and Kosovo Albanian mayors took power with only a 3.5 percent voter turnout – leading many Kosovo Serbs to believe the government lacks legitimacy.

Albin Kurti will meet Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic in Brussels next week, among other things, to discuss the situation in northern Kosovo.
