The International Football Association has handed out fines to Croatia, Serbia and Saudi Arabia for the events of the World Cup. The Croatian Football Association was fined 50,000 Swiss francs, or about 50,000 euros, because the Croatian fans had shouted inappropriately in the Canada match. The target of the shouts had been the Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan.

Croatian fans had insulted Borjan, a Croatian-born Serb who fled the war.

Serbia, on the other hand, was fined 20,000 francs, or about 20,000 euros, for the flag in the team’s dressing room, which was on display in Serbia’s dressing room before the Serbians’ World Cup opening match against Brazil on Thursday. In the photo taken from the costume booth, the banner hanging in the Serbian booth had a map of Kosovo colored in the colors of the Serbian flag. The text was “no Surrender (Nema Predaje)”, i.e. “no surrender”.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008, but the Serbian leadership has not recognized Kosovo’s independence.

Thirdly, Fifa handed out fines to Saudi Arabia, who received six yellow cards in the first two group games. The amount of the fine is 15,000 Swiss francs, or about 15,000 euros.
