EA Sports has announced new Icons for FIFA 23. At the same time, 8 names that were playable as legends in FIFA in the past are also missing.
These are the new icons: Three names will be added to the Icons field in FIFA 23 – Xabi Alonso, Jairzinho and Gerd Müller. You can find out more about the new icons in FIFA 23 here.
At the same time, EA Sports gave an overview of the “class of 23”, i.e. all the icons of FIFA 23.
A total of 100 legends are said to be included in Ultimate Team this time. However, it is noticeable that only 98 icons have been announced for the game so far. So there should be two more icons.
Furthermore, it is noticeable that there are not only new names, but also some that are missing.
Which icons are missing in FIFA 23?
These old icons are missing: The most conspicuous name is one that was expected in advance. According to the current status, Diego Maradona will no longer be in FIFA 23.
Maradona has been one of the absolute top players in Ultimate Team in recent years and had incredibly strong icon cards. However, Maradona had to be taken out of the game in FIFA 22 as a result of a lawsuit by a third party.
Only players who had already drawn Maradona as a card could still use it. However, he was removed from packs, drafts, and the Soccer Aid World XI Team. Apparently it is no longer available in FIFA 23 because it is missing from the official list.
In addition to Maradona, there are also 7 other names missing from FIFA 22, who will probably no longer be legends by the time of the FIFA 23 release.
Which icons are still missing in FIFA 23?
casillas: The Spanish goalkeeper was only added as a new icon in FIFA 22, this time he is apparently no longer there. Only Petr Čech, Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and Lev Yashin remain in the list as iconic goalkeepers.
cafu: Like Casillas, Cafu was only added in FIFA 22. The right-back was really strong in his position and is likely to be missed by players.
Deco: The Portuguese midfielder has been around for a long time, but his cards weren’t all that high. The same applies to the next icon.
giggs: Ryan Giggs also appears to be retiring from the game.
Guardiola: Pep Guardiola was added in FIFA 20 but was also considered to be one of the weaker options in the iconic midfield. But you can now play him in career mode as a coach.
Overmars: Marc Overmars is also missing in FIFA 23. However, Overmars had already been banned in FIFA 22 after a real life scandal.
Inzaghi: Filipo Inzaghi also no longer has a card in the list of FIFA 23 icons. The Italian attacker was considered by many players to be one of the weakest icons, as his real class simply did not want to be transferred to the game due to weak values in FIFA.
Was that it with the icons? Since there are still two icon slots available in the “Class of 23” listing, it is possible that two old icons will still fill them. But that seems unlikely – because why shouldn’t you have entered them already?
However, it is unclear whether the icons have been permanently removed or whether they will return to FIFA 23 at a later date.
It has also happened that icons have been converted to hero cards. But based on previous announcements, that seems unlikely.
