When the EU is to procure monkeypox vaccine, Sweden will be represented by the Public Health Authority. This is after a decision by the Ministry of Social Affairs.
“EU joint purchases of vaccines and medicines served us well during the pandemic and can now do so again,” says Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren (S) in a press release from the government.
The World Health Organization has classified the spread of monkeypox as an international health emergency. Vaccination against monkeypox began in some Swedish regions last week. This is done by the healthcare system contacting people exposed to a risk of infection and offering them a vaccination. When the vaccination began, it was clear that Sweden received an allocation of vaccine doses that corresponded to the need for approximately 1,500 individuals.
