Following announcements made by government spokesperson Gabriel Attal, FFP2 masks are finally available free of charge in pharmacies for the most fragile. Explanations.

A free delivery for people at risk and in failure of vaccination

In parallel with Gabriel Attal’s announcements yesterday, an order published in the Official Journal has brought a breath of fresh air to the most fragile patients facing Covid-19. Henceforth, details the text “Community pharmacies deliver free of charge […] FFP2 type masks […] to people at risk of severe forms of Covid-19 and immunocompromised, for whom vaccination does not induce the production and maintenance of an antibody titer at a sufficient level to ensure sufficient protection”.

    Are therefore concerned:

    • People at risk of severe form of Covid-19
    • And in failure of vaccination for medical reasons: immunosuppression, immunity reduced by treatments or procedures or other specific medical situations
    • And in capacity to support it during several hours and for a daily use. It is therefore up to the doctor to recall and explain the conditions for the correct and adequate wearing of this type of mask.

    These three conditions are cumulative.

Each person concerned by this measure will be able to obtain “a delivery of 20 masks for two weeks or for a delivery of 50 masks for five weeks” specifies the decree.

    FFP2 masks to protect yourself

Surgical masks were already distributed to fragile, contaminated or contact case people. However, we know that they are used to prevent the spread of the virus but much less to protect against possible infection, especially in closed and poorly ventilated places.

With an FFP2 mask, the wearer protects himself. Since January 13, kindergarten teachers can receive them on request.

    Nearly 300,000 vulnerable people

Indeed, for around 300,000 people in France, the first confinement never really ended, as they are so vulnerable to the virus. These are people with little or no receptivity to vaccines or immunocompromised, in whom “a disease or treatment leads to a rapid decline in the level of antibodies”. We know, for example, that the latter represent approximately 30% of patients in intensive care.
