The number of Swedes who lose their driving license is decreasing. After several years of increased revocations, the number of revoked driving licenses fell by 20 percent during the first half of the year compared with last year.

Have the Swedes become more orderly in traffic? Possibly not, but the latest statistics on the number of driving licenses revoked from the Swedish Transport Agency show at least a certain trend break. During the first half of this year, the Swedish Transport Agency decided on 17,988 driving license revocations – a decrease of 20 percent compared with the same period last year.

“The reduction is mainly due to the fact that the police have taken fewer driving licenses than last year. In recent years, the number of driving licenses taken care of has increased, but now the numbers have turned downwards “, says section manager Maria Lundberg Ohlsson at the Swedish Transport Agency in a press release.

The category “a significant violation, usually speeding” (9,902) accounted for more than half of all revoked driving licenses. The only reason for revocation that increased compared to last year was drunk driving and minor violations.

“The reason why more driving licenses were revoked due to drunk driving in the first half of this year is probably due to the fact that the police have again started to perform routine breath tests at traffic controls, which was not done during the pandemic,” says Maria Lundberg Ohlsson.

Whether or not the overall reduction in the number of revocations is due to fewer traffic controls is unclear.
