Fewer drowning accidents so far this year

In June, significantly fewer people drowned in Sweden than during the pandemic years. In June, 14 people lost their lives, compared to 23 people in June last year.

According to Michael Olausson at the Swedish Lifesaving Society, however, June this year has been a month with two faces – only during the last six days of the month, eight people died, according to their preliminary statistics.

– The last part of June is alarming. Then it was better weather with a hot midsummer weekend and it is ominous that drowning incidents should be so associated with hot weather, he says.

In total has 24 people died in drownings the first six months of this year. During the same period last year, 50 people died.

– The ice age is very insidious. This year, it has been favorable with strong ice and then a rapid ice melt, says Michael Olausson.

– The lower figures so far this year are more about weather factors, than that the protection against drowning accidents has improved, he says.
