The fate of the Titanic continues to fascinate. More than a dozen films have brought the 1912 shipwreck to the screen, not to mention countless documentaries, TV adaptations and series episodes. For many, the favorite is James Cameron’s blockbuster Titanic. But 60 years ago, another film made one of its characters the protagonist: It’s Gold Digger Molly.
Titanic character was the heroine of a musical comedy 60 years ago (!)
The American musical comedy Golddigger Molly was released in cinemas in 1964. It tells the story of the real ones Molly Brown, who survived the Titanic disaster as a passenger. The film by Charles Waters (The Top Ten Thousand) uses many fictional passages. Brown (Debbie Reynolds) is rescued from the Colorado River as a child, works as a saloon singer and has fun with the European nobility before boarding the Titanic.

Brown also appears in Cameron’s Titanic: here she is played by Kathy Bates (Misery). and shows compassion for Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio), who reminds her of the humble circumstances of her roots.
The real Margaret Brown became famous primarily because of her behavior during the ship’s sinking when she stood by many other passengers despite endangering their own lives. As the Encyclopedia Britannica explains, she had become wealthy through her husband’s mining business. She was committed to women’s rights and trained as an actress. Brown died in 1932.
