Barely an hour and a few kilometers separate the two meeting places set for the activists: on one side, the former president of GhanaJohan Mahama (2012-2017). On the other, Mahamudu Bawumia, the current vice-president, who defends the colors of the ruling party. He will have at his side the outgoing president, Nana Akufo-Addo (2017-2024) who is completing his second and final term.

The atmosphere has been festive since this Thursday morning in town where we come across small brass bands. Accra is covered in flags and street vendors continue to sell vuvuzelas, caps and loincloths bearing the image of each party.

Malfunctions during military voting

Two days before the general elections, calls for vigilance regarding the transparency of the vote are increasing. The first test for these elections took place on December 2, with the military voting. And, already, the first alerts have been launched by the Coalition of National Observers (Codeo). This platform of civil society observers notes dysfunctions, notably three cases of vote buying or even non-compliance with the secrecy of the ballot in certain polling stations. Even if these cases remain isolated, Codeo calls for respect for the integrity of elections.

Vigilance is also required from the candidates, in particular from John Mahama’s team. His party fears fraud. “ We will remain vigilant because we do not trust the institutions », insists Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, secretary general of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). “ We protect our vote », he adds.

Mahamudu Bawumia, candidate of the ruling party, calls for moderation and calm, insisting on unity and protesting against hate speech based on ethnicity.
