Her voice, sublime, the Montreal artist Fernie puts it at the service of an RnB as luminous as it is delicate, like her first album: Aurora. At 25, this moving performer, black and queer, considers music as a “safe space”: a safe place, a refuge, to reveal oneself, share one’s emotions and assert one’s identity. Portrait.
Adopted in Brazil by a Brazilian mother and a German father, Fernie grew up in the English-speaking West Island of Montreal, Quebec. Her voice, agile and clear, Fernie first put it to use in choirs at school. He then trained with teachers at the West Island Music Academy.
At 18, he shares on SoundCloud The Acoustic EP: five tracks recorded at home in one day. Five years later, he delivered Aurora, a first album that received much attention in Quebec and Canada in which this author-composer intends to show himself as he is, in complete transparency. Result: lyrics imbued with vulnerability and melodies tinged with a subtle melancholy for an RnB that is as luminous as it is delicate. Meeting in Paris, a few hours before his concert at La Cigale for the MaMA, with a black and queer artist, who considers music as a “safe space”, a safe place, a refuge, to reveal oneself, share one’s emotions and assert one’s identity. An artist that we will have to follow very, very closely!
