Father sentenced to life in prison for murder of his son

The little boy of 19 months was found dead in his cot at home in Eslöv.
Now the father is sentenced to life imprisonment for murder.
– I just wanted to shut him up. He was very whiny, he says in questioning.

The father called 112 himself on December 9, 2022.

When emergency services rushed to their home in Eslöv, the 1.5-year-old son was found lifeless in the cot. Despite CPR, the boy’s life could not be saved.

Today for the verdict against the father.

The district court concluded that he is guilty of murder and assault and sentenced him to life imprisonment.

According to the investigation, the father forcefully pushed the son’s head backwards and downwards so that the child could not breathe and thus died. The violence caused “shortness of breath, pain and two rib fractures.”

The assault took place the day before by the man’s child taking “a hard grip on the lower part of his face” so that the boy got bruises.

The motive: He whined

During interrogation, the father admitted to the assault but denied murder.

– I had no intention of killing him, he says in police interrogation.

– But I just wanted to shut him up, he shouted a lot and stuff like that. It was

not my intention to kill him.

The man has further told the police that the 1.5-year-old had a cold and therefore, among other things, did not want to eat.

– He was quite sick, so he was whiny, says the father about why he exposed the boy to the violence.

Raised the alarm before the death

Before the murder, the social service in Eslöv’s municipality had received several reports of concern, the most recent one was made eight months before the death.

The father had been admitted for psychiatric care, and both the police and the care reported their concern.

However, the social services considered that the child was protected with the mother. The father’s treatment later switched to outpatient care and he was then allowed to have contact with the boy. According to himself, he later stopped taking his medications but did not tell the child’s mother. He also did not show up at the medical service, despite the doctors trying to contact him.

Chamber prosecutor Josefin Sävlund, who investigated the murder, states that she will submit a report to the National Board of Health and Welfare when the verdict is confirmed. This is to investigate the handling of the child.
