Father of the Bride director Charles Shyer dead

Shyer began his career as a screenwriter for television series such as “Omaka par” and “The Partridge family” before moving on to the film industry with the blockbuster hit “Nu blåser vi snuten” in 1977.

Three years later, he co-wrote the script for the Goldie Hawn film “The Girl Who Made the Rag”. Together with his colleagues Harvey Miller and Nancy Meyers He was nominated for an Oscar for that performance.

In the same vein, he married Meyers. They became a close-knit team working on films such as “Baby Boom”, “Irreconcilable Differences” and “Father of the Bride”, with Steve Martin in the title role. Here wrote Shyer both scripted with his wife and directed the films.

In 1998, the couple wrote the script for “The Parental Trap”, the film which Lindsay Lohan had his breakthrough with. This time Nancy Meyers directed – but the same year the film premiered, the couple separated.

Charles Shyer died on Friday after a short illness, aged 83. On Instagram, Nancy Meyers posted a black-and-white photo of herself and Shyer, along with a broken heart emoji. Lindsay Lohan responded to the post – also with a broken heart.
