Dame Vivienne Westwood is dead, reports Sky News.

The legendary fashion designer turned 81 years old.

Westwood, who was born in Britain, made her mark in the 70s when she designed clothes for the SEX store she ran with then-husband Malcolm McLaren.

The clothes were worn by, among others, the Sex Pistols and played a decisive role in the development of the punk scene in Great Britain.
She then went on to establish her brand globally and today the company has stores in countries around the US, Asia and Europe.

Vivienne Westwood died on Thursday at her home in Clapham, surrounded by family, according to a statement.

Her husband and business partner Andreas Kronthaler says he will continue the work “with Vivienne in his heart”.

– We have worked until the end and she has given me a lot to do. Thanks honey.

Westwood also made a name for herself by campaigning for the climate and by supporting Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.

She has also dressed up as Margaret Thatcher for a magazine cover and driven a white tank into Prime Minister David Cameron’s residence to protest a mineral extraction method.
