Fascinating phenomenon at Etna: Perfect “smoke rings”

Volcanic smoke rings are natural, and scientists say Mount Etna in Sicily emits more than any other volcano on Earth.

Until recently, it was not really known how relatively rare phenomenon occurred. And technically, they’re not made of smoke. Instead, the rings are largely made of condensed gases, predominantly water vapor, that leave the magma and are pushed up from the volcano’s vent.

– We are enjoying this together with hundreds of people here on Etna, says Giuseppe Barbagallo from Gruppo Guide Alpine Etna Sud.
