Farmers are concerned about the government’s groundwater level plans: ‘They should not get involved’

Farmers are concerned about the governments groundwater level plans They

What are the (leaked) plans for the water level?

The cabinet wants to raise the groundwater level in peat meadow areas. Peat will rot if the soil becomes too dry and then CO2 is released. Exactly what the cabinet wants to counteract, given the current nitrogen crisis.

Raising the water level should also prevent houses from sinking. Drought threatens hundreds of thousands of houses in the Netherlands to subside – which can cause considerable damage.

What exactly will happen, where and when is still unknown. Tomorrow the cabinet will present a package of measures to combat nitrogen emissions. It probably also has more to do with the water level.
