Mikhail Gorbachev, the last leader of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), died in hospital at the age of 91. The body of Gorbachev, who died after a serious and long illness, is sent off on his last journey today. The absence of Russian President Vladimir Putin at the funeral, which took place with a public farewell in the Column Hall of the House of Unions, within sight of the Kremlin, drew attention.
