Hotel employee Lisa (Rachel McAdams) wants to take the night flight from Dallas to Miami despite her fear of flying. At the airport she meets the charming Jackson Ripper (Cillian Murphy). On the plane they both realize that they are sitting next to each other. But then the nice meeting turns into a nightmare.
Ripper calmly explains to her that he is a contract killer. With Lisa’s help he wants to organize a murder. To get her to cooperate, he threatens to kill her father (Brian Cox). The title of the film refers to the English term “Red-Eye Flights”, which are night flights. As a rule, passengers on such flights leave the aircraft with red eyes. This is due to the lack of sleep that such late travels bring with them.
The name of Cillian Murphy’s character, Jackson Ripper, also has a meaning. The allusion to the serial killer Jack the Ripper is intentional and is even mentioned in the film. This shows right from the start that Jackson isn’t necessarily the nice guy he pretends to be.
