Owen Wilson is best known for his satirical and often over-the-top comedies such as Zoolander and Wedding Crashers, as well as for romantic dramas such as Marley & Me. Wilson proves that he can also do something completely different in the gripping survival thriller No Escape, in which he and his family fight for their lives in a brutal game of cat and mouse. Wilson is joined by former Bond actor Pierce Brosnan.
In the role of the normal family man who desperately tries to to save his family from a hellish situationOwen Wilson delivers an impressive performance. The intensity and desperation with which he fights for his family’s survival makes his performance in No Escape particularly gripping.
A family in the chaos of rebellion: That’s what No Escape with Owen Wilson is about
In an unspecified, fictional Southeast Asian country, a brutal uprising breaks out overnight. The population rises up against foreign investors who are stealing their resources. In the midst of this chaotic and dangerous situation, Jack Dwyer (Wilson) finds himself with his wife Annie (Lake Bell) and their two daughters. Their only chance of survival: to get from the hotel surrounded by insurgents to the American embassy.
As Jack and his family desperately search for a way to escape, they receive unexpected help from American tourist Hammond (Pierce Brosnan). But Hammond, who initially appears to be an unexpected savior, may himself be more deeply involved in the unrest.
The name says it all: No escape from this nerve-wracking thriller
As the title suggests, there is no way out. Every time you think the family has finally made it, No Escape surprises you with another twist. The gripping story takes us from the first Excite until the last minute. I immediately put myself in the desperate position of Owen Wilson’s character and wondered how I would react in such a situation. There is literally no escape from this thriller for 103 minutes.
In addition to the gripping premise, the film also features brutal and emotionally extremely stressful scenes that add to the thrill. It becomes particularly intense when the characters are confronted with almost unimaginable decisions that reflect the total desperation of their situation.
If you don’t think Owen Wilson is capable of such an intense and dramatic role because of his comedic films, you’re not alone. I had these concerns too, but No Escape definitely proved me wrong. His authentic portrayal of the desperate family man makes this film frighteningly realistic.
