This Sunday, April 2nd, 2023, a fantasy blockbuster will be shown on Free TV for the first time: Um 8:15 p.m. RTL shows Disney’s live-action remake Mulan. Directed by Niki Caro (Whale Rider), the remake is not only based on an ancient Chinese legend, but also on a substantial budget.
Mulan on TV today: One of the most expensive fantasy adventures for Disney
The cartoon film Mulan was released in 1998. More than 30 years later, Disney dressed its Chinese heroine in a real guise and sent her again disguised as a man in the fight against dark forces: Based on the old Chinese ballad by Hua Mulan, war is threatening the empire and men are drafted from every family to defend their homeland. To relieve her ailing father of this burden, Mulan (Yifei Liu) pretends to be a son and uses a false identity to earn the respect of the army.
The fantasy aspects are scaled back a bit in the Mulan remake, although a shapeshifter and a phoenix instead of a dragon keep the magic alive. In addition, a hidden guest appearance touchingly refers to the template.

Mulan remake starring Donnie Yen, Liu Yifei and Gong Li
Among all of Disney’s live-action reboots of animated classics, Mulan is not the least of his enormous budget a special role: the fantasy remake officially cost 200 million dollars, making Mulan the most expensive female-directed film in the world. But even within the Disney remakes, Mulan was only surpassed by The Lion King (with a budget of $260 million) and drew level with Alice in Wonderland ($200 million). Actress Gong Li even claimed the Mulan cost was closer to $300 million.
The costs were not reflected in the cinema revenues because the launch of Mulan fell in the middle of the corona pandemic. The cinemas were closed in the USA, and the film grossed around 70 million dollars worldwide. That’s why an alternative evaluation came into play: Disney + published Mulan in one streaming experiment for €20/$30 before the remake became available as a regular subscription three months later.
