When 2017’s The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, flopped disastrously at the box office, it didn’t just ruin the chance for a sequel. All hope for a universe of horror and fantasy characters, a connecting dark universe, was gone. And director Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek: Picard) is still reporting the horrific experience. The film is on TV today.

On TV: Fantasy flop with Tom Cruise was “the worst defeat” for the director

Kurtzman explained in 2022 on The Playlist podcast Bingeworth y.

[Die Mumie] was probably the worst loss of my life. I regret a million things about it. Up until then I wasn’t a director. As brutal as it was, it made me a tougher person and a more lucid filmmaker. If I now have the feeling that something is wrong, I will no longer remain silent.

In Die Mummy, Princess Ahmanet (Sofia Boutella) awakes to life again after thousands of years of sleep, threatens to destroy the world and is to be stopped by a courageous hero (Cruise). What worked well in the forerunner The Mummy was torn apart here by the critics who, among other things, criticized the film as “dusty, […] miserable and ridiculous” referred to (via The Playlist).

What exactly happened during production can no longer be traced exactly. According to a Variety report the lead actor’s excessive control influenced the filming enormously. The flop made the Dark Universe, starring Tom Cruise as The Mummy Heroes, a thing of the past.
