With One Piece, Netflix has restored many anime fans’ faith in good live-action film adaptations. In the past, the streaming service rarely showed a good hand when it came to adaptations of popular templates such as Cowboy Bebop or Death Note.
Was the pirate adventure of Luffy and his Straw Hat gang a rare exception? Netflix can convince us otherwise this year. In a few months Yu Yu Hakusho is already landing the next anime adaptation in Netflix’s program. Fans of exciting fantasy action should definitely make a note of the series.
Netflix fantasy with action: What is Yu Yu Hakusho?
The Yu Yu Hakusho anime originally ran from 1992 to 1995 – the same time as Dragon Ball Z – and consists of 112 episodes. The original comes from mangaka Yoshihiro Togashi (husband of Sailor Moon creator Naoko Takeuchi). The fantasy action story is a pinnacle of the shonen genre, but Unfortunately quite unknown in Germany. Neither manga nor anime have ever been published in German.

But what is Yu Yu Hakusho actually about? The plot revolves around the teenage bully Yusuke Urameshi, who is well on the way to going wrong. And then he dies. Even those responsible in the afterlife are surprised when Yusuke heroically throws himself in front of a car to save a little boy. So he gets a second chance and is sent back to earth on behalf of the prince of the spiritual world (a talking pacifier baby!) to defeat evil demons as a ghost detective.
Yu Yu Hakusho is a Japanese Netflix production. The project is being produced by, among others, Kazutaka Sakamoto, who also brought the manga adaptation Alice in Borderland to Netflix. Thanks to the live-action series, numerous new fans can now experience the adventures of Yusuke and his friends – 30 years after the anime.
