When the magical girl series Puella Magi Madoka Magica appeared on the anime scene in 2011, people expected a Sailor Moon sequel about girls with magical powers. That is exactly what the twelve-part series is, but it is not for nothing that anime author Gen Urobuchi is called Urobutcher with nicknames. The innocent-looking series quickly developed into a darker direction, thanks to complex characters and an even more complicated time travel story became one of the most popular titles of the 2010s.

Since 2013, fans have been stuck on the shocking cliffhanger of the sequel film Madoka Magica: Rebellion, which will be released in winter 2024 with the unexpectedly announced anime film Puella Magi Madoka Magica: The Movie – Walpurgis Night Rising should be continued.

Bad news for anime fans: Sailor Moon successor Madoka is waiting for her new film

The wish for a speedy resolution of the diabolical Madoka Magica cliffhanger will remain unfulfilled for a while, because as Anime News Network reports, the film from the animation studio SHAFT has been postponed by a year postponed to winter 2025. This has to be some kind of witchcraft.

In Madoka Magica, magical girls with various abilities fight against so-called witches, whose labyrinths, fed by desperation, appear as surreal spaces in which the animation goes completely off the rails. The girls are recruited by the cute creature Kyuubei, who grants them a wish in return for their services. But while Madoka and her friend consider joining the fight, the antiheroine Homura does everything she can to prevent them from accepting the deal.

Spoilers for the Madoka Magica series and the Rebellion movie: As it turns out, Homura is a time traveler who has been stuck in the same loop for a long time. She tries to prevent her best friend Madoka from becoming a powerful magical girl and then an even more dangerous witch. At the end of the series, Madoka uses her wish to become a goddess who releases all magical girls from their duty after death so that they do not turn into witches. At the end of the film sequel, Homura subverts this wish and, out of love for Madoka, becomes the devil who takes her place.

The artistic Trailer for the film Madoka Magica: Walpurgisnacht Rising shows the world created by Homura after she pulled Madoka out of her goddess position to give her a normal life. But the other girls still seem to have a say:
