Even at the age of 77, director legend Steven Spielberg still hasn’t had enough of filmmaking. In addition to an upcoming project about the cop from the classic film Bullitt and a Cape of Fear series project that he is overseeing for Apple TV+ with Martin Scorsese as producer, he now wants to return to his beloved science fiction.
As the man behind classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and ET: The Extra-Terrestrial, as well as more recent sci-fi films like his War of the Worlds version and Ready Player One, he’s of course no stranger to the genre. But will he also direct?
A new film about UFOs by Steven Spielberg is in the future
As Variety almost casually dropped in an article about Scorsese, Spielberg is currently working on a project, this time should be based on his own idea. This is one UFO movie, so familiar territory for the filmmaker. He entrusted the work on the script to David Koepp, who had already contributed the scripts for Jurassic Park, the aforementioned War of the Worlds film and, most recently, Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny (director: James Mangold).

It was not announced whether Steven Spielberg would be back in the director’s chair for the planned UFO film. In addition to the cop film, he also has a Napoleon miniseries and the adaptation of the UK crime thriller The Thursday Murder Club on his list, so he maybe just as a producer again will pull a few strings behind the scenes. We will keep you updated on this.
