Two parents and their son in Kronoberg county have been convicted of defrauding themselves of several million kroner from the Swedish Social Insurance Agency, local media reports. They worked as personal assistants for a woman – who is also being sentenced.

According to Smålandsposten, this is one of the largest assistance frauds ever uncovered in the county.

The two parents and the woman are sentenced to between one and two years in prison for serious crime of support, while the son receives a suspended sentence. In total, the people must have received payments of roughly five million kroner from the Social Insurance Agency between 2017 and 2021, when the police swooped. The four must repay the money.

The woman who received help is deemed to have greatly exaggerated her need for care and time reports have reported assistance work that did not take place.

During the trial, several people testified that the woman copes with her everyday life without extensive help. She was driving her own car when she was arrested, and she is also said to have asked one of the assistants via text message to “exercise the electric wheelchair” which she did not use so that it would look good before a service, the newspaper writes.
