The open-world MMO Fallout 76 has had a kind of two-tier society for a long time. Veterans had overly powerful weapons that newer players just couldn’t get their hands on. The latest patch radically solves the problem, but also introduces new bugs.
After a release with a lot of criticism and a difficult time for Fallout 76, the developers stayed tuned and continued to improve the MMO. Content was added, balancing was tightened, the world became more alive.
But Fallout 76 has had a problem with balancing for years and that is due to so-called “legacy items”. These are items that can no longer be obtained in-game. But if you had them in your inventory, you could keep the items – and some of them were overpowered.
For example, it was no problem for players with certain legacy items to clear difficult events in PvE that were real challenges for “normal people”. Not to mention the PvP balancing issues. “Annihilation” would probably be an appropriate word.
But with the latest patch, fairness should finally return to the apocalyptic wasteland, but again not without new errors.
The Nuka World Tour is currently running in Fallout 76. You can watch a trailer for it here:
“The game is currently better than ever”
What happens to the legacy items? In the patch notes for the update, the developers explain that the “illegal” mods are being removed. Only weapon mods that can currently be equipped remain in the game.
Any mod that is currently unavailable will disappear without replacement. You can find the corresponding paragraph in the patch notes in the spoiler box:
Even though our game is set in a post-apocalyptic world, we always want that world to be fair, fun, and welcoming for everyone. While you’ve indulged in your exploration and builder instincts, we’ve been busy working on a new system that works behind the scenes to remove unauthorized combinations of expansions that violate our EULA. This is to ensure that every single player uses and trades the same items and no one is being cheated.
With today’s update, we are implementing a system to remove illegal weapon attachments that cannot be obtained in-game. Most players will not notice any change to their existing weapons. However, players who are in possession of a weapon with a mod that cannot be equipped on that weapon in the intended way may see a decrease in that weapon’s damage output and the absence of the mod.

What are players saying about the new update? The mood on the Fallout 76 subreddit is pretty positive after the update. A comparatively large thread with almost 500 comments and 670 upvotes is headlined: “The game is currently better than ever” (via reddit.com).
Not only are the legacy adjustments praised, other minor changes are also highlighted.
Even players who have lost their legacy items are not necessarily critical of the changes. The removal of the items is sometimes called “Legacygate” and for some players, Fallout 76 immediately became more varied again.
User NiceButOdd writes on reddit: “At first I hated that I lost my legacy items yesterday. My reflex was to tell my friends I was quitting. A little later I backtracked and wanted to at least see how it would play after Legacygate. […] I’m actually enjoying the game more now because I realized I was bored because everything was too easy.”
The latest adjustments have changed the game in ways that have had a positive impact on many players. Sometimes something like that is worth more than new content. This is particularly evident in Fallout 76.
What new problems came into play? However, there are also negative reports. A power armor ability that reduces weight is said to be broken. Some players have logged into Fallout 76 and are unable to move as a result.
In addition, the plasma gatling gun should only fire 17 shots, although the ammunition reserve is at 500. This renders the rapid-fire weapon virtually unusable.
Overall, however, it was a strong update for Fallout 76 that made the MMO better and fairer.
