Fake honey is causing it for beekeepers

Fake honey is chemically produced honey that is often produced outside the EU. The price of the honey is significantly cheaper than that from beehives in Sweden.

– In previous years, we have produced about half of the honey we consumed here in Sweden, says Ulf Bäckås, beekeeper with several hives outside Asarum.

But it doesn’t look like that anymore. Now several beekeepers around the country are testifying that they are not getting their honey sold.

New sales channels for beekeepers

When it is no longer possible to sell to commercial buyers, Ulf Bäckås has had to look for other sales channels.

– For example, social media, but that means a lot of extra work for me.

Have there been any financial losses?

– I don’t have the same margin on this as I usually do.

Want to see new rules around honey

Ulf Bäckås wants to see stronger regulations around how to handle the issue of imported honey.

– You have to look at how to get it, because otherwise this imported honey will take over the entire market, he says.

It is not possible to lower the price to make the Swedish honey more attractive?

– Yes, you can give Swedish honey away, but then you can’t work with it. Then you can have two hives in your garden and see it as a hobby. That’s nice, but the business won’t work.
