The police warn that counterfeit banknotes abound in the North region and mainly in Västernorrland. In recent days, the region has drawn up a dozen reports of fake 500 notes, according to a text on the police’s site.
“This type of case is going in waves and right now we clearly have a wave,” says Mikael Ahrtzing, head of the preliminary investigation at the police fraud center in Sundsvall.
People who discover a counterfeit banknote should contact the police.
“The counterfeit banknotes are poorly made, but if you are above handling cash or may be in a stressful environment or situation, you can still be cheated,” says Ahrtzing.
One piece of advice is to look at the details of the banknote, and to wiggle it. Shifts in color and movement must be visible in the banknote, and when transparent, the watermark must be visible.
