Failed sci fi film from hype director that should get 2

With the sci-fi hit District 9, Neill Blomkamp has one with his feature film debut acclaimed low-budget hit turned. However, the hype surrounding the director was severely slowed down by his third feature film, Chappie.

The blockbuster you can watch today on NITRO is financially failed and was largely torn apart by criticism. Blomkamp even had a trilogy in mind with the heart project.

Neill Blomkamp’s career was badly damaged in sci-fi flop Chappie

On a budget of $49 million, Chappie has grossed over $102 million worldwide. Even if he was able to recoup his budget as a result, the film is still considered a financial flop. The reviews were anything but positive. On the US collection portal Rotten Tomatoes, Chappie only gets an average of 32 percent.

Speaking to IGN, Neill Blomkamp shared how close he felt about Chappie as a film. In his mind he even imagined one Sci-Fi Trilogy before:

I actually wrote it as a trilogy. So, I didn’t write the other two, but I wrote concepts for the other two, so I think I know what happens with the next two, but… but I don’t know if I want to say what happens. I’m not sure I’ll do them either, but…

Since the interview was made before the blockbuster’s disappointing theatrical figures, nothing came of the plans for further Chappie films. Blomkamp’s career has been general since then on a descending path.

While he was even being discussed as a director for a new Alien film in the meantime, he was recently only able to shoot the low-budget horror film Demonic. However, he was criticized torn even harder and only gets 15 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.
