Faced with the proliferation of SVODs Canal is in turn

Faced with the proliferation of SVODs, Canal+ is in turn launching its streaming offer, called TV+. For 2 euros per month, it provides access to more than 80 channels and exclusive Canal content. A serious competitor for Molotov TV?

The major groups of French TV channels are gradually letting themselves be tempted by the sirens of streaming. After the shutdown of the Salto platform, TF1 and M6 launched their own SVODs, called TF1+ and M6+ respectively. Entirely financed by advertising, they offer tens of thousands of hours of content, including exclusive content. Also, faced with the evolution of television consumption, other groups have no choice but to adapt. This is why, in A press release, Canal announces the launch, this Wednesday, May 22, of TV+, a new offer giving access to 80 live and replay channels – but not Canal+ channels – for the sum of 2 euros per month. It can be accessed from the myCanal application, available on many media such as computers, smartphones, tablets, TV boxes (Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast), Airplay, TVs connected to the Internet compatible and even game consoles (PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series). The objective: to offer an alternative to traditional television to people who only use connected devices.

TV+: access to more than 80 channels

The service includes all the functions of myCANAL, namely live access, live control, replay and downloading of content. It provides access to DTT channels – including TF1 and M6 – and 24 thematic channels – such as RTL9, Infosport+, Sport en France, Comédie+, Olympia, Planete+ Aventure, MTV, Mangas, BFM Business, TV5 Monde, TV Monaco, Euronews , France 24, BBC News, NHK World Japan, Arte, Bloomberg and Aljazeera – and 8 digital channels – such as Jamel Comedy Club TV, Les Nouveaux Explorateurs, Gym Direct and Clique TV. THE “little extra something” of the offer? A selection of premium content from Canal+, such as Black Baron, Tokyo Vice, Gomorra, Gears, The English, Interior Sport on Kyllian Mbappé, etc. In addition, each month the offer “will be enriched with programs that make waves on Canal+”to start with Boys Boys Boys, Florence Foresti’s latest show. A nice gift which, casually, helps lure users towards the group’s more expensive offers.

TV+ is offered at the price of 2 euros per month, without commitment, for a simultaneous user. To add an additional user, you will have to pay 2 euros more. With its new offer, Canal is directly attacking Molotov TV. Note also that the platform has just increased its prices, for the third time in three years, going from 5.99 euros to 6.99 euros per month for its most popular offer, Molotov TV Extra. At this price, the platform offers 100 channels (TNT included) in Full HD definition and simultaneous broadcasting on four screens, in addition to a cloud recording function. TV+ will also have to face competition from operators, who also offer complete applications – and sometimes for free.

TV+: a gateway for Canal+

The launch of TV+ only follows the change in uses: television consumption, live or on demand, is increasingly done via the Internet, without going through operator boxes, from smart TVs, tablets, smartphones, game consoles… There is also the question of the dispersion of programs – which will not improve with the upcoming arrival of Max, HBO’s service, in France (see our article). “We have observed a certain fatigue among consumers who no longer want to waste time switching from one application to another to find content. They favor fluid and seamless experiencesexplains Christophe Pinard-Legry, the general director of Canal+ France in charge of business, at Figaro.

“In an increasingly fragmented market, where TV channels are launching their own streaming service one after the other, having an aggregation proposition that brings together all the offers in the same place makes sense”. It sees in TV+ and its attractive price a way to enter French homes”. It remains to be seen whether time will prove him right!
