She also spoke extensively about the explosion in energy prices due to the war which is weighing on the continent’s economy and proposed solutions.

The President of the European Commission wants to launch a complete and in-depth reform of the electricity market. The current system no longer does justice to consumers who should pay less for renewable energy, she acknowledged.

Ursula Von der Leyen therefore wants to decouple electricity prices from the dominant influence of gas. Capping the revenues of electricity producers based on renewable energies and nuclear would raise 140 billion euros which could be for households and businesses in need, said Ursula von der Leyen.
