Extremists attacked villagers in Burkina Faso

Among the dead are nine volunteers who were part of military forces.

The first attack was carried out last Thursday in the village of Dembo. The second attack targeted Yargatenga, near the border with Togo and Ghana, according to local officials describing the attacks on Monday.

About 100 armed perpetrators attacked Yargatenga, they arrived on motorcycles and small trucks. The attackers surrounded the village and opened fire on the local population.

— The attacks and fighting lasted for several hours, says the civilian official who says that it is the third time in a month that the town has been attacked.

The total death toll in attacks that occurred last week in Burkina Faso is estimated at around fifty. And the week before that, around 60 people were killed by militant Islamists.

The unrest in Burkina Faso has been ongoing since 2015, when militant groups operating in Mali crossed the border.

The military, led by Ibrahim Traoré, seized power in a coup in early 2022.
