After helping out as screenwriters on Scary Movie, duo Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer made their big break as parody directors with 2006’s Date Movie. After the financial success of the film, several similar works followed, such as Fantastic Movie, My wife, the Spartans and I or Beilight – bite for supper.
What all the films have in common is their rather abysmal quality, in which, apart from numerous allusions to big blockbusters like Avatar, 300 & Co., there is hardly a gag. On NITRO is running on Tuesday evening at 11:50 p.m The Turkey of Panem – The Starving Games. Here you can “convince” yourself of this type of film.
Hunger Games & Avatar sci-fi spoof sucks
The plot of the film is mainly based on the great role model The Hunger Games – The Hunger Games. In addition, films like Avatar, Avengers and The Expendables are made fun of in The Turkey of Panem.
This film from the Friedberg & Seltzer forge could hardly convince. In any case, parody fatigue made itself felt at the box office in 2013. With a budget of just under $5 million, the flick grossed just $3.8 million.
Previous parodies like Date Movie or Beilight brought in a good 80 to 85 million dollars with higher budgets of around 20 million dollars.
Fortunately, the era of parody films is over
After Panem, Friedberg and Seltzer only returned to the parody genre with Superfast 2015. The 20 million dollar strip, in which car racing films like Fast & Furious are mainly screwed, also flopped with one far too low gross profit of $2 million worldwide. Since then, the era of these parody films has fortunately come to an end.
