The expectations were gigantic, the disappointment even greater: With The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, director Peter Jackson has brought a fantasy adventure to the cinema that you can enjoy every second immense production effort looks at. Unfortunately, the film couldn’t live up to the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Only the sequel, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, was able to do so with one scene Middle-earth magic that Jackson first captured on the big screen in the early 2000s. Tonight you can experience this scene on television. It is an absolutely pivotal moment in history.
The Little Hobbit Meets the Dragon Smaug: A Fantasy Encounter for the History Books
In the second part of the Hobbit saga, Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and the chaotic troop of dwarves around Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) are on their way to… Lonely mountain. They encounter some scary creatures, from giant spiders to bloodthirsty orcs who know nothing but doom.

However, the most exciting encounter occurs in the final minutes. Bilbo finally meets the titular dragon, Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch). The entire film builds towards this moment β ββand then Jackson really delivers. As much as you can criticize the Hobbit trilogy, everything is really right here.
From cleverly playing with scale to exploring the mysterious place we’ve heard so much about before. Bilbo climbs over mountains of gold and tries to sleeping beast not to wake up. But then it’s too late: the little hobbit looks into a larger-than-life dragon’s eye.
Suddenly Middle-earth feels like it did in the Lord of the Rings again. Jackson stages the scene with an incredible Feeling for the characters and their surroundings. Every movement, no matter how small, takes your breath away. For this goosebumps moment alone, it’s worth taking a second look at The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
