Several large forest fires continue to rage in southwestern Europe as a result of the extreme heat wave. Thousands of people have been forced to evacuate and leave their homes – and even tourists are fleeing. In several places, the rescue personnel have difficulty in making all the necessary efforts.
In Portugal, more than 2,000 firefighters are fighting four major fires. During the rescue operation, a pilot who fought the fires died on Friday, when his plane crashed near Vila Nova de Foz Coa in northern Portugal, reports AFP.
