The EU countries and the EU Parliament actually already agreed last autumn to demand zero emissions from all new cars from the year 2035. However, a confirmation is blocked by above all Germany and Italy, who are now pushing to also allow new cars that run on synthetic so-called e-fuels.
According to the news site Politico Europe, it was the Czech Republic that invited the meeting, which is held completely outside the EU’s regular meeting system. Thus, Sweden, as this spring’s chairmanship of the EU’s Council of Ministers, is not involved in the meeting either.
In addition to those mentioned above, France, Spain, Hungary, Slovakia, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia and Finland are also invited.
The agreement from last autumn about 2035 should actually have been confirmed by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, but has been postponed to the future.
