Expressen: Missing part of Estonian bow visor found | News in brief

A new study reveals that the Estonia accident was probably not caused by sabotage.

Estonian researchers have found the railing of the bow ramp of the ship Estonia, which sank almost 30 years ago, reports a Swedish newspaper Expressen.

The discovery was made in July with the help of an underwater robot. On Friday, Expressen published pictures of the railing.

Expressen has also interviewed an Estonian researcher Tauri Rosewood From the Norwegian Security Investigation Agency.

According to Roosipuu, the railing of the bow ramp was found 458 meters west of the bow visor.

– It undoubtedly comes from Estonia, Roosipuu said.

According to the official accident investigation, the reason for the sinking of the Estonian was the detachment of the bow visor in rough seas and water flooding the ship.

The bow visor of the ship was raised shortly after the accident. Estonia’s bow ramp was raised again for further investigations last year.

It has long been debated whether the sinking of Estonia was caused by bow visor sabotage.

According to Roosipuuu, the discovery made now confirms that it was not at least sabotage.

– According to what we can see now, the railing was not destroyed as a result of external sabotage. The find also confirms that the ramp was opened, as the railing could not fall off the ship while the ramp was closed. The railing is normally placed inside the ship, Roosipuu says.

Estonia sank in heavy seas in the Baltic Sea on September 28, 1994. 852 people died in the accident.
