On Tuesday, the Swedish security police Säpo arrested two people in the Stockholm area on suspicion of gross unauthorized handling of secret information. The authorities have searched several homes.
Expressen magazine according to one of the arrested is a high-ranking Swedish soldier. Another suspect is his wife.
Expressen reports that the soldier suspected of the crime has had a long career in the Swedish Defense Forces and has also worked abroad.
He knows the military system of both Russia and Ukraine well, and has also been in contact with the Swedish intelligence service from time to time, says Expressen.
Nowadays, it is said that he works in official positions outside the defense forces.
Swedish television’s SVT Säpo does not want to comment on the matter at this stage of the investigation.
– This is a serious matter. It is a crime that endangers Sweden’s security, says Säpo’s spokesperson to SVT.
Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist says that he will not confirm any information because the investigation is at an early stage. He also does not deny the possibility of more arrests.
According to Expressen, key ministers of the Swedish government and the top management of the defense forces have been told about Säpo’s investigation.
