Anyone looking for explosive suspense in today’s TV programming should take a look at the Hong Kong blockbuster Shock Wave. In it, a gangster terrorizes the metropolis with explosive devices in order to carry out a personal vendetta.
Shock Wave tells of an explosive revenge campaign
Andy Lau (Infernal Affairs) plays Cheung, bomb disposal expert and demolitions expert in Shock Wave. As an undercover agent, he infiltrates the gang of a bomb-specialist gangster (Wu Jiang from A Touch of Sin), who is exposed as a result.

A few months pass and Cheung begins a new life outside of the undercover danger zone. As the boss of the bomb disposal squad and with a new love at his side, everything is looking rosy. If it weren’t for the gangster Hung, who wants to take revenge for the spy’s betrayal. Soon, bombs are exploding in the city, civilians are in mortal danger and Cheung has a suspicion: Hung must be behind it.
From this, director Herman Yau (The White Storm 2) spins an action film with explosive interludes and some wrecked cars. The explosive hunt for explosive devices is carried out by superstar Andy Lau, who you can actually always watch, no matter how flat his character is written.
The action spectacle has a sequel that tops Part 1
Shock Wave was released in 2017 and was a huge hit in Chinese cinemas. The sequel followed in 2020, also starring Andy Lau, however, this time he’s playing a new character. After serious injuries, his bomb disposal engineer Poon himself is suspected of being part of a terrorist organization. Part 2 grossed over $200 million worldwide and was the 10th highest grossing film of 2020. Part 3 of the bomb disposal series has already been teased (via Far East Film).

Shock Wave 2 was released in Germany under the title City Under Fire – Die Bombe tickt. The sequel surpasses its predecessor, firstly because Lau’s character is much more complex. This allows the actor to show dark facets that are rarely seen.
Secondly, director Yau ups the ante when it comes to action and launches an impressive battle of materials up to a highly exciting finale on a bridge.
