First stop in Alexandria, the westernmost of the Egyptian cities. Founded in 332 BC. AD by Alexander the Great, a former conqueror who became pharaoh, this great cosmopolitan city made Egypt shine throughout the Mediterranean for a long time. Don’t miss the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, built on the site of the ancient Library of Alexandria, and Fort Qaytbay, where the famous lighthouse of Alexandria, the seventh wonder of the ancient world, once stood.
