The second round of the 2024 legislative elections should allow the French to choose between two candidates. However, there is a possibility of election with three qualified. This is called a triangular.
The French are once again called upon to express themselves through voting. The 2024 legislative elections will take place on June 30 and July 7 respectively. A vote which is held in two rounds in all constituencies, during the second, the vast majority of voters will have to choose between two candidates to represent them within the National Assembly.
There is, however, a probability that at the end of the first round, the French will once again have to choose between more than two candidates in the running. This is called a triangular.
What is a triangular for the 2024 legislative elections?
At the end of the first round of the 2024 legislative elections, if a candidate collects more than 50% of the votes cast as well as a number of votes at least equal to 25% of those registered, the latter is directly elected in his constituency. However, this is a rare occurrence, and the majority of candidates competing for the 2024 legislative elections will have to go through a second round which will pit them against another candidate.
However, there is an equally rare situation, but which could well occur following the results of the first round of the 2024 legislative elections. It is a triangular one. When, at the end of the first round, three candidates manage to accumulate 12.5% of the votes of registered voters, then the latter are eligible for the second round of the election.
If none of the three candidates withdraws, voters must then vote in the second round for their preferred party according to the three choices offered. At the end of this vote, the candidate with the most votes wins and becomes a member of the National Assembly. If two candidates are tied, there is no question of electing two deputies. The National Assembly has 577 and not one more. Seniority then takes precedence and it is the oldest candidate who is elected.
Is there a risk of triangulars after the first round of the 2024 legislative elections?
Triangular ones are quite rare, but not impossible. During the last legislative elections of 2022, there were 8 triangulars in all the constituencies. The latter mainly brought together candidates from the Ensemble, Nupes and National Rally parties. In the event of a triangular, the candidates still in the running will have a few days to submit their application to the prefecture in order to be eligible for the second round of the 2024 legislative elections.
