Soup is among the most consumed foods in winter with its different varieties. Soups, which are thought to be very effective in winter diseases, can put health at risk. Dr. Deborah Lee states that drinking hot soup may increase the risk of esophageal cancer. Dr. Lee explained that much attention should be paid to the temperature of soups and dishes.
CAN CAUSE THE PRODUCTION OF CANCER CELLS
Dr. Lee said: “It is still unclear whether high-temperature eating or drinking increases the risk of esophageal cancer. Studies have yielded conflicting results. However, eating or drinking high-temperature food and drink can cause inflammation in the esophagus, as well as burns and scalding. If this pattern is repeated over many years, it can lead to the production of cancer cells.
HOT BEVERAGES CAN TRICK THE RISK OF CANCER
There are no studies on the risks of hot soup and esophageal cancer. But hot soup will likely have the same effects as hot drinks.” While studies haven’t examined hot soup, there are several articles linking hot drinks to lethality. For example, research published in the journal Clinical Nutrition warns that hot drinks can nearly triple your risk of esophageal cancer.
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAVE BEEN EXAMINED IN THE STUDY
The study of over 500,000 people focused on people who are more likely to drink coffee and tea. The study concluded that while more research is needed, there is some evidence to suggest that coffee consumption is causally related to the risk of esophageal cancer, and that it is related to the temperature effect.
INCREASED RISK OF CANCER IN PEOPLE EXPOSED TO HARMFUL SUBSTANCES
Dr. Lee listed another study by looking at this link. “In a 2019 prospective study of Japanese tea drinkers followed for 10 years, those who drank 700 ml or more of very hot tea per day had a 90 percent risk of squamous cell esophagus,” he said. “It should be noted that squamous cell esophageal cancer is more common in Asia, where there is a higher incidence of smoking, high alcohol intake, and exposure to environmental pollution.” Risk factors such as smoking and alcohol can also make you more prone to developing esophageal cancer.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO TO PROTECT?
According to gastroenterologists, you should not eat or drink food or liquids at temperatures of 140°F (60°C) or higher. Dr. Lee added: “When you consider that water boils at 212°F (100°C), that’s almost half the temperature of boiling water, and it’s actually quite warm. It makes sense to let hot drinks or hot foods like soup cool down before eating them. Boiling water is 212°F’. It takes three minutes to cool from (100°C) to 176°F (80°C).
