Experts want to play a hot new MMORPG right now because the devs promise not to ban them

The MMORPG Throne and Liberty will be launched by Amazon in Europe in 2024. It was released in South Korea on December 7, 2023: Western players who want to play it now and are willing to go through some hardship can do so. There is even an English version. NCSoft will not ban any “foreigners” – at least for now.

What kind of MMORPG is this?

  • Throne and Liberty is a new MMORPG in the Lineage series. In South Korea, “Lineage” is what WoW is here: a huge franchise that has dominated the MMORPG market for decades.
  • Amazon wants to bring Throne and Liberty to the West in 2024, but there is no exact release date yet.
  • The game launched in South Korea on December 7th and is now being received much better than one could have expected. Before the release there was more and more negative news about the MMORPG, but apparently the mood has turned positive again. On reddit, one player calls it a “modern, Asian WoW.”

MMORPG doesn’t want to ban foreigners if they behave

This is the latest development: If you’re a Westerner who wants to play a game in Asia, you’re often in trouble. In the past it has happened again and again that you could get an account with a lot of effort, but then the publisher suddenly didn’t think it was so cool and simply blocked all foreign players.

As has now been announced, NCSoft will not do this with Throne and Liberty. As can be seen from a YouTube video, the devs on December 22nd. explains that they will not ban foreign players as long as they behave and follow the rules.

How is this discussed? The possibility of playing the game is now being discussed on reddit and some MMORPG fans are hinting that they are making the effort to play the game in South Korea now.

It’s not that easy because you need a VPN provider and somehow get a verifiable account – so you’ll probably have to buy an account on the gray market, since Westerners lack the social security number you need to play in South Korea.

It’s not really “safe” either. It could be that NCSoft will reconsider this position in the future.

    The topic is therefore controversial:

  • Some say they will do this and see playing there as an “extended beta test”.
  • For others, this is too much effort; they feel insecure with a “purchased account” that can disappear at any time and want to wait until the game is officially released in the West.
  • One user says, for example, that there is a clear difference between a legitimate account and a purchased, verified account that uses a stolen ID: “Re-verification waves” would certainly “wash away” a lot of foreign players – but technically speaking, that is not the case Spell.

Some also fear that NCSoft’s permission for Westerners to play the game in South Korea now indicates that the Western release is a long time coming.
