Experts criticize the new terror law

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

The political support for voting through the new terrorism legislation in Sweden is great. Legal experts, on the other hand, think that the proposal has such major flaws that it should not even be tabled in the Riksdag.

According to the bill, it will be a criminal offense to, for example, take care of equipment, set up camps, tents, arrange meeting rooms, organize activities, cook food or be responsible for transport for a terrorist organization.

– The risk is that these loose definitions cause things to happen that were not intended to be punished, says Patrik Bremdal associate professor of constitutional law at Uppsala University.

This is the second time a Swedish government has tried to criminalize participation in a terrorist organization. An earlier bill was withdrawn in 2019 after harsh criticism from the Legislative Council.
