Growing problem
The Barka Foundation estimated the number of homeless people from Eastern Europe at 5,000 at the end of last year, reported the NOS. According to aid organizations, the group is growing rapidly. These often involve men from Poland, Romania, Hungary or Bulgaria. They are brought to the Netherlands as cheap labor, but fall by the wayside when they are no longer needed, for example because the seasonal work they did has ended. Because their place of residence is often linked to their employment contract, they become homeless. Because they do not have a Dutch identity, they are not allowed to use the night shelter in Utrecht.
