We are in the near future: after South Korea’s first manned moon mission ended in an explosive tragedy, five years later they are preparing to send their second compatriot into space. But the nation that is conquering the world with K-pop is unfortunately not blessed with any luck outside of the planet, as a solar wind causes another malfunction that leaves astronaut Hwang Sun-woo (Kyung-soo Do) stranded on the moon.

In the face of another catastrophe in the cosmos, members of the Naro Space Center (which also exists in reality) south of Seoul contact their former director Kim Jae-guk (Kyung-gu Sol) to perhaps help the astronaut fighting for his life out of trouble.

Director Yong-hwa Kim had previously directed the South Korean fantasy adventure Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds and its sequel Along with the Gods: The Last 49 Days. The films are based on Korean myths and are set to be continued by Kim thanks to their huge success at the domestic box office.

His sci-fi adventure The Moon was not well received by Western critics, considering the mediocre Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 33 percent. The audience score of 86 percent is more impressive. The The film’s special effects have received multiple awards: At the Blue Dragon Film Awards for Best Technology and at the Buil Film Awards with the Art/Technology and State of the Year Awards.
