Response from State Secretary Jean Rummenie
State Secretary Jean Rummenie of LVVN tells RTV Utrecht that he is also very shocked by all the incidents involving wolves. He was in contact with administrators about it and spoke to those involved at Den Treek about their concerns. He recently presented the National Approach to Wolves, with which he and the twelve provinces want to prevent people, pets and livestock from being attacked.
“For example, we will soon be setting up a National Livestock Protection Team that will help livestock farmers to take wolf-resistant measures. We will also launch the National Wolf Information Point (LIW) early next year. Here people can get clear and independent information in a central location, for example about where wolves are and what they can do if they encounter a wolf. We are also working on the definitions of problem wolf and problem situation, which are intended to allow us to act more quickly in the event of incidents.”
Rummenie also wants to set up a national expert team that can quickly and independently advise provinces in acute situations. In response to the designation of areas for wolves, he says that he will have research carried out into this next year. He also wants to map out how his ministry can respond to incidents where the municipality and the province do not have resources.
