Amnesty says Peru’s security forces have used unnecessary and deadly force to quell anti-government protests. The organization has presented evidence of this to President Dina Boluarte.
About 50 people have been killed in clashes between security forces and protesters since the ouster and arrest of former president Pedro Castillo in early December.
The demonstrators demand, among other things, that Boluartes resign, that parliament be dissolved, new elections and a new constitution.
Amnesty International’s Americas director Erika Guevara Rosas says the evidence is based on information received from the authorities and that at least 46 cases of human rights violations have been registered.
Reportedly, President Boluarte has repeatedly said that she never ordered lethal force to control the protesters.
After peaking in January, the protests have subsided in the past week.
