7 MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT NATURAL BIRTH
Stating that in recent years, the interest in natural birth has increased with the sharing of experiences among mothers-to-be thanks to both trainings and the use of social media, Dr. Ece Sınacı says: “Our aim is to accompany the pregnant woman to a birth experience where she will feel at home with as little intervention as possible. Interest in this form of birth has increased because people are now more courageous and prefer to experience it themselves rather than act on bad experiences they have heard. Doctors and midwives are holding their hands and accompanying them.” Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Ece Sınacı listed the 7 most frequently asked questions about natural birth, and gave important warnings and suggestions.
SHOULD WE FEAR ARTIFICIAL PAIN?
All the additional interventions are good. It saves lives when used at the right points. Artificial labor offers us the opportunity to start the labor that has not started, it increases the strength of contractions in pregnant women who do not have enough contractions, and enables the birth to progress. Of course, when contractions start while there is no contraction, it may be difficult for the pregnant to adapt, but we can manage this process better with expectant mothers who have received training on the pregnancy process and childbirth.
IS THERE NO INTERVENTION IN NATURAL BIRTH?
First of all, it is understood from ‘natural’ birth; It is not possible for us to do this if our grandmothers gave birth on their own in the field or in the garden. Women had to go through this experience without the support of anyone. Our aim is to accompany a birth experience where the pregnant woman will feel at home with as little intervention as possible. Of course, vascular access should be opened, NST (the test showing the baby’s heartbeat in the mother’s womb and the mother’s labor contractions) should be taken at regular intervals.
WHAT HAS CHANGED IN NATURAL BIRTH FROM THE OLD TODAY?
Dr. Ece Sınacı “Today, when we say natural birth; It is in the comfort of home but in the safety of the hospital and the process of healthy mother-baby that the pregnant woman starts her own contractions, progresses at the pace it should progress every hour, the water bladder opens by itself, the pregnant woman can move as she wishes while meeting the contractions, privacy is given importance, we benefit from the therapeutic effect of water-aromatic oils-music. “We can understand a birth that results in a birth,” she says.
IN HOW DOES THE BIRTH OCCUR?
In fact, we want; meeting some of the contractions at home. No matter how comfortable the hospital is, it is a foreign environment for pregnant women. We wish that contractions at home come to a certain point and shorten the time spent in the hospital. At the beginning of contractions, the pregnant woman is in the ward, and when the baby’s arrival approaches, we take her to the delivery room. If the mother and father wish, the father can also be present at the birth. Birth means the birth of a new family as well as the birth of a new individual, regardless of its shape. The baby should establish skin-to-skin contact not only with the mother but also with the father.
IS IT PRESSED FROM THE TOP?
Pressing from the top is a method we use to help the baby get out unharmed, in case the baby doesn’t come out when it should and the mother has no more strength to push. It may seem very rude to an outsider, it is not a routine for every pregnant woman, but it saves lives when done when necessary.
WHEN IS EPIDURAL ANESTHESIA NECESSARY?
Each pregnant woman’s way of meeting contractions and her reaction to contractions is different. If the pregnant wants to experience vaginal delivery, if there are no obstacles in ultrasonography and physiological terms, but if the contractions are too heavy, epidural anesthesia provides the pregnant woman with a comfortable vaginal delivery.
CAN PREGNANCY MOVE DURING THE DELIVERY PROCESS?
Dr. Ece Sınacı said, “If possible, they should never sit still. Even when NST is filming, we want them to stand and walk. Midwives support pregnant women while walking, as they do in every field, and accompany the pregnant woman to walk up and down the stairs of the hospital, this obviously shortens the delivery time. Birth is a team effort, and in addition to the doctor, the midwife, psychologist and doula (birth supporter who has completed their training in the birth process) can attend the birth,” she says.
