We used not only our own observations but also this year’s GLAAD report as sources. In it, the largest LGBTQ+ non-profit organization in the USA examines every year how much queer representation there is on television. We also looked at the German figures from the Lesbian and Gay Association.
While Netflix is still a pioneer after queer-inclusive milestones such as Orange Is the New Black and Sense8, things are looking bleak elsewhere. view in the future leaves a sinking feeling, because more than a third of all queer characters from US series will not be returning next year.
But there is also a glimmer of hope on the horizon: While Netflix is tirelessly pursuing an inclusive course, things are also happening in Germany. Although not in prime time, the public broadcasters are clearly making an effort to implement queer content with web and ZDFneo series such as Loving Her.
